A spokesperson for the Arlington Independent School District said that the Swift Elementary School student fell into the drain about 3:30 p.m. CDT, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The 11-year-old girl was attempting to retrieve her grandmother’s apron that had blown away from her, KXAS-TV reported. When she climbed into the drain to grab the apron, she got stuck, according to WFAA-TV.

A technical rescue team with the Arlington Fire Department cut a section of the drain around the girl’s upper body, pulling her to freedom after she had been trapped for about an hour, according to KFDW-TV.

“The whole time she was in the storm drain, we had our crews down there and she was able to talk to us and respond,” Jeff Durand of the Arlington Fire Department told reporters. “And like I said, when we got her unstuck, she was able to kind of get off the ground on her own power.”

Firefighters said the girl was taken to an area hospital as a precaution but did not appear to be seriously hurt, KXAS reported.
