LONDON — Britain’s current foreign secretary, Liz Truss, is expected to be appointed the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Truss beat former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak in an internal race for the leader of the UK’s governing Conservative party and thus the U.K.’s new prime minister.

Under Britain’s parliamentary system of government, the Conservative Party was allowed to hold an internal election to select a new party leader and prime minister without going to the broader electorate, according to The Associated Press.

Truss will replace Boris Johnson, who announced his resignation on July 7.
