MANSFIELD, Mo. — One person was killed and another was injured when a suspected impaired driver crashed into them in Mansfield, Missouri.
A driver of a pickup truck reportedly crossed the center of the road hitting police officer Michale Bryson, 39, and firefighter Justin Sanders, 31, according to KYTV. Bryan and Sanders were parked on the side of the road at the time of the crash.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report said the crash occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday in Mansfield, according to the news outlet.
Bryson was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Sanders was a passenger in the car. According to KYTV, he died at the scene.
Mercy Emergency Medical Services wrote in a Facebook post that Sanders was doing a ride-a-long when the crash occurred. They said the other driver was believed to have been impaired.
“Justin was off duty last night and participating in a ride-a-long with Mansfield Police. At approximately 0125 while sitting roadside performing traffic surveillance, their vehicle was struck by a suspected impaired driver. Mercy EMS Wright County crews responded almost immediately, but tragically Justin passed away at the scene,” Mercy Emergency Medical Services said.
“Please keep the Mansfield, MO Police Department, and the Mansfield Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers,” the Mansfield Police Department wrote on Facebook.
In a crash report obtained by KYTV, the other driver, a 21-year-old, was arrested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol on pending charges of driving while intoxicated-death of another person, first-degree assault, careless and imprudent driving, and no seat belt.
Police say the Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
