A Northeast Miami-Dade neighborhood had an adrenaline-packed Monday morning when an uninvited guest—a large crocodile—decided to take a stroll up to someone’s front door.
Residents on Northeast 209th Street and 23rd Avenue awoke to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies on their doorstep, urging them to stay back. “Stand right there. Stay as far as that,” one deputy warned.
At first, homeowner Gil Kochavi and his family had no clue why officers were outside. That is, until they checked their surveillance footage and spotted the scaly intruder smack in the middle of their yard.
“We started looking at the surveillance, and there it was—a very, very large crocodile right at the doorstep,” said Kochavi.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first encounter. Footage from a few weeks prior showed what appeared to be the same crocodile lounging in the yard. “I think it’s the same one, but I can’t tell you for certain,” Kochavi added.
The crocodile eventually wandered back to the community lake after spending hours near some bushes. While residents like Kochavi acknowledged the risks of Florida wildlife, others were less comfortable. “It’s unnerving when they’re in the park—terrifying when they’re on the street,” said Edward Brian, a concerned neighbor.
Though it’s well-known that at least three crocodiles live in the area’s lake, their recent wanderings are making neighbors nervous. Whether they’ll be relocated remains uncertain, but one thing’s clear: life in Florida always keeps you on your toes!
