Starting Wednesday, January 15, Ocean Drive between 5th and 13th streets will shift back to two-way traffic, ending a three-year southbound-only setup. The move eliminates bike lanes, sparking outrage from locals and visitors alike.
“This is horrible,” said Ohio visitor Rebecca Puglisi. “We need public transportation options.”
The change follows a judge’s ruling that Miami Beach lacked the necessary permits to maintain the current traffic flow. Miami-Dade County raised concerns, prompting the lawsuit filed by the Clevelander Hotel citing safety issues.
Mayor Steven Meiner opposes the decision, calling it “outrageous” and vowing to appeal. He expressed frustration that a judge, not elected by Miami Beach residents, overturned the setup.
Business owners remain divided. Mitch Novic of the Sherbrooke Hotel supports the change, citing financial burdens and mismanaged traffic control under the current setup. Others argue the elimination of bike lanes detracts from Ocean Drive’s charm.
“You have perfect weather. Biking should be encouraged, not cars,” said New Zealand visitor Lilly Freeman.
The appeal will be heard no earlier than February 26, 2025, leaving the community divided over the future of this iconic stretch.
