Starbucks Brings Back Free Refills and Condiment Bars in Major Policy Shift

Starbucks is making a return to its pre-pandemic ways with two big changes: free refills and the return of the condiment bar.

As of Jan. 27, customers can once again customize their drinks with sweeteners, milk, and more at the self-serve condiment bar, a long-missed feature removed during the pandemic. Additionally, Starbucks is reintroducing free refills for customers who choose to enjoy their drinks “for here” in a ceramic mug, glass, or personal cup. Refills apply to hot or iced brewed coffee and tea—just no disposable cups allowed.

These updates come as part of broader changes under CEO Brian Niccol. Earlier this month, Starbucks ended its open-door policy, now requiring guests to make a purchase to use seating or restrooms. The company has also scaled back frequent promotions and removed the upcharge for nondairy milk, responding to pressure from vegan and lactose-intolerant customers.

With these shifts, Starbucks is finding a balance between restoring its in-store experience and refining its policies to better serve paying customers. Whether you’re a daily visitor or an occasional coffee drinker, these changes are set to reshape the Starbucks experience.
