Tokyo Introduces 4-Day Work Week to Tackle Low Fertility Rates

4-day work week

In a bold move to address Japan’s declining fertility rate and improve work-life balance, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced a four-day work week for government employees starting in April 2025. This policy aims to support working mothers, alleviate the nation’s demanding work culture, and encourage healthier family dynamics.

Under the new plan, government employees will enjoy three days off per week. Additionally, parents of young schoolchildren will have the option to leave work early in exchange for a reduced salary, further easing the challenges of balancing career and family responsibilities.

With Japan’s birth rate hitting record lows, this initiative represents a significant step toward fostering a society where career ambitions and family life can coexist harmoniously. If successful, Tokyo’s move could serve as a model for other cities and industries seeking solutions to similar challenges.
